Block Scheduling Information
At Cumberland Valley High School, we understand the academic and social-emotional challenges students face. We also value the development of the seven core competencies highlighted in our Portrait of an Eagle: adaptability, confidence, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, responsibility, and empathy. As education evolves to meet the needs of a rapidly changing world, schools nationwide are adapting instructional models to better prepare students for success. To support these goals, we believe block scheduling offers a sustainable approach to enhancing student learning and growth in the key competencies outlined in the Portrait of an Eagle.
In Fall of 2023, Cumberland Valley High School began exploring the potential of block scheduling. This process started with extensive research into the pros and cons of block scheduling, focusing on its impact on student learning, teacher workload, and overall school performance. A dedicated Teacher Block Scheduling Committee was formed to evaluate the feasibility of this potential transition, examining both logistical and educational considerations. The committee actively sought teacher feedback to understand how block scheduling could influence instruction and classroom dynamics.
To gain deeper insights in the decision-making process, the committee conducted site visits to Central York High School and Hempfield High School, where block scheduling is successfully implemented. These site visits allowed us to observe firsthand how the model operates in practice. In addition, student feedback was gathered to incorporate their perspectives on the proposed change. To ensure community engagement, the high school administration hosted two informational sessions for parents, presenting findings and facilitating discussions about the proposed changes.
After thorough research and consultation, the Block Scheduling Committee recommended moving forward with a block schedule proposal. This decision was based on the observed benefits at other schools and the belief that block scheduling will better address the needs of both students and staff at Cumberland Valley High School.

"I appreciated hearing about how much the culture changed in the building after they moved to a block schedule. Teachers' relationships with their students improved and the students themselves felt a reduction in stress because of fewer courses each semester."

"The site visit gave me a better understanding of the lived experience of faculty and students with block scheduling. It seems more manageable in many ways than the scheduling we are using at CV right now."

"The visit was very positive. There were some great highlights, but my biggest takeaway is the positive impact on teacher and student mental health as a result of the lightened workload."

"The biggest takeaways were how more dynamic learning can occur when you have longer periods and how much easier the academic load is for high school students. The block schedule seems like the way to go for students and staff!"
