Internships

Cumberland Valley School District partners with the local community, businesses, and organizations in order to provide authentic internship opportunities. Sophomores, juniors and seniors can elect to participate in an internship. These resources are designed to provide interested students, parents/guardians and employers with an overview of our internship program.

What is an internship?

Internships are work-based learning experiences in a particular occupation. They are intended to provide students with the opportunity to explore occupations. Through participating in an internship, students will be able to make informed decisions regarding careers while networking with community businesses, organizations and professionals.

Internships are highly structured with specific learning objectives and student performance assessments. Internships may be paid or unpaid. Students are permitted to participate for a semester, academic school year or over the summer. Students’ internship schedules are developed collaboratively by the business, the student, and Cumberland Valley’s Career Coordinator.

Why should students do an internship while in high school?

There are a number of reasons why students should consider doing an internship while in high school. Internships can help students make more informed decisions about future college and career choices. Internships provide real world experience for students as they determine what they will do after high school.

Additionally, internships provide students with valuable connections to future employers. According to the Society for Human Resource Management, “eighty-nine percent of employers said students will have a competitive advantage when looking for a college internship or full-time job, and 83 percent said those internships will yield better paying jobs.”1
