Semester III Course Expectations

Semester III Course Information and Expectations

Thank you for your interest in Semester III Courses. This special opportunity allows students to earn up to two credits towards graduation after successful completion of the course(s). All courses are offered in a blended format.

Full credit courses = 60 hours of face-to-face instruction, in addition to online coursework
Half credit courses = 30 hours of face-to-face instruction, in addition to online coursework

Courses run 2.5 hours Monday - Thursday (either 7:30- 10:00 OR 10:15-12:45) with EVERY Friday (and some noted holidays) OFF.

Workload/Homework

Semester III courses operate under a compressed schedule as compared to courses taken during the regular school year, therefore work to be completed outside of the classroom will be significant. Students can expect at least two hours of blended work/homework per course each night.

Grading

Students will be graded according to CVHS standard grading policies. Courses are considered Level 2 courses (i.e. College Prep) and are weighted as 1.0 credit. Final grades factor into students’ GPAs the same as courses during the school year do. Grades will be entered into Schoology by teachers and transferred to CVSIS at the end of the summer. A failed course in Semester III will be reflected on the student's transcript.

Attendance Policy

Students taking full credit courses will be allowed to miss up to but no more than four (4) days of face-to-face instruction. Students taking half credit courses will be allowed to miss up to two (2) days of face-to-face instruction. Students will be expected to complete any and all makeup work for their absences. For any planned absences, it is imperative that the student prearrange with the teacher these absences so that they can stay current with the coursework.

Laptops

Each student enrolled in a Semester III course will be provided with a laptop for use in the blended course. Students and their parents will sign a Semester III Student Loaner Laptop Agreement prior to being provided a device. Students are responsible for loss of the device and/or any damage to the device. Students may elect to not take a school device. In these cases, students must bring their personal laptop to school daily and have consistent access to this device and the internet at home, for outside class learning and assignments. To expedite the distribution of laptops on the first day of class, please turn in the Signed Agreement form by June 4, 2019. These are available inside your Semester III Required Introduction Course, or message Dr. Shaffer through Schoology.

Schoology

The online component of each class will be completed through the Schoology platform. Prior to the start of your course(s), a live link will be available in mid May.  Students will need to complete the “Semester III Required Introduction Course." To begin this course, go to Schoology. Enter your Student Computer Log-in username (not email) and password with which you log onto the computer at school. Once you are logged in to Schoology, click on “Courses” at the top of the homepage and then click “Join.” Enter the access code provided in the letter sent home.  Students will receive information on how to join their specific Schoology Semester III course on the first day of class or through personal teacher contact. Please check for updates regularly.

Questions regarding these expectations can be directed to your Semester III teacher or Dr. Shaffer in the Learning Commons Office.
